tion hinter sich stehen hat, wird naturgemäf} in starkem Mal}

I am happy fhat the Exhibition of Indian Art which was orgonised
at the Villa Hügel in Essen, Germany, is being taken Io Vienna
for exhibition there at the Könstlerhaus. Except for some spe-
cialists, little is known about Indian arl in Europe. And yet, to
understand India or, indeed, to understand any counfry, some
understanding of fhat country's art is necessary. Thal arf ölten
gives us a grealer insighf info the mind ol a people Ihan some
temporary manifeslation.
A people who have five thousand years or more ol history and
Iradition behind fhem, must necessarily have been conditioned
greatly by this long experience. So has India been conditioned,
and something of fhat conditioning might be seen from her arl
which is the outcome of her philosophy and fradifions.
I welcome fhis Indian Arf Exhibition in Vienna and hope fhat il
will bring a closer understanding between the people ot Austria
and the people of India.
