Gertrud, Fritz and Anna Elisabeth Karoline
(“Ilse"), were born of his second marriage to
August Hanemann. When in Klostermühle
the Spauns lived in a villa built by Leopold
Bauer at the beginning of the 20th Century
(Figs. 47, 48, 51-59). This was also a focal
point in their close contact with Contempor
ary artists (Figs. 44-46).
Max Freiherr von Spaun died in 1909, a year
after making the factory over to his son. In
view of the insoivency registered in the year
1911, the formation of a limited Company in
1913, and the outbreak of the First World
War, it is astonishing how productive “Joh.
Lötz Witwe” was in the years between 1905
and 1918.
LOETZ G LASSWARE 1905-1918
With the exception of the designs of a hand-
ful of artists, the production of this glass-
works after 1905 is largely unknown com-
pared to Loetz’s art nouveau glassware. As
far as style is concerned, the glass with the
“streaky decoration” (cat. nos. 1-16) is most
reminiscent of the turn of the Century, while
the usually brightly coloured encased over-
lays represent a new direction. Lobmeyr may
weil have been invoived in “Melusin” glass, a
type of glass probably produced from 1905
onwards. The articles with silver pearls (cat.
nos. 18-22) or goid and silver spangles in the
glass (cat. nos. 23-29) and the crystal spun
glass to designs by Leopold Bauer (cat.
nos. 32, 33) probably date from about the
same time. Glass with layered decoration,
much of it to designs by Eduard Prochaska
(cat. no. 35) with freely formed spiral shapes
(cat. no. 36) employs a similar technique.
The etched muiti-layered glass (encased
overiay, crystal glass, casing) from the per-
iod around 1910 is dominated by Adolf Beck-
ert. This glass is characterised by zoomor-
phic (birds and fish) and floral motifs which
clearly had their origin in a weaith of Oriental
motifs (cat. nos. 38-42). Beckert was also re-
sponsibie for multi-coloured etched glass
with golden spangles (“Ophir”, cat. nos. 43,
44), partial casings with etching and fused
colours (cat. nos. 45-47) and coral-like dec-
