The glass collection in the Technical
Museum for Industry and Trade in
Vienna is the only one of its kind in
the world. Contemporary acquisi-
tions of Biedermeier and early His-
toricism (stemming from the Impe
rial Polytechnical Institute, originally
belonging to the “Cabinet of Fac-
tory Products" or the “Technical Ca
binet'' and later encorporated into
the Technical Museum) were added
to in the early 20th Century with ac-
quisitions from the newly founded
Technical Museum.
A two-volume publication is devoted
to the subject, “Color in Glass.” The
first volume treats the series of
sample colors from Biedermeier
into Art Deco (flacons from Bohe-
mia, England and France; glass
cakes from Italy, samples of flat
glass from Brunn am Gebirge, se
ries of colored beakers from Haida
and Krasna), deals with Utility glass
of various origins such as glauber’s
salt glass production in Austria and
finally handles the color groups of
white, black, yellow and green.
The second volume will be devoted
to blue and red, and will contain a
comprehensive register. Detailed
quotations from Contemporary liter-
ature (glass technology and exhibi-
tions) are intended to make access
easier to many sources which are
otherwise not very accessible.
