The archaic severity of ancient sculpture which during the
Maurya and up to the Kushana period developed the type of
the Indian conception of the human form as such, is blended in
this masterpiece of the "classic" Gupta period with clearly
perceptible influences from Northwest Indian Gandhara, particularly
in the treatment of the folds of the robe. The Image of
the Buddha combines sublimity and grace and was to become
the Prototype on which Indian and colonial Indian art was to be
founded during the nexl Ihousand years.
