Hand  die  linke  Brust  preljt,  sind  weitere  altindische  Motive.
Der  Kopf  in  der  Mitte  des  einen  Lotusmedaiiions  schiiderf
möglicherweise  absichtlich  grotesk  die  Physiognomie  der
Ureinwohner.  Verschiedene  Brahmi-Inschriffen  nennen
fürstliche  Stifter  wie  Nagasena  aus  der  Kaundinya-Familie
von  Patalipufra.

Der  lange  Fries  ist  unten  durch  Glocken  und  oben  durch
Zinnenmusfer  mit  Lotuspflanzen  eingefaßt.  In  der  Mitte
wird  er  durch  eine  Lotusranke  in  Bildfeider  zerlegt.  Hier;

armlets.  The  medallions  are  ornamented  wifh  ancient  Oriental
fabulous  animals  of  Mesopotamic  origin  and  with  native  floral
motifs.  Further  ancient  Indian  motifs  are  Triratna  Symbols  and  the
tiny  figure  of  Sri,  goddess  of  fertility,  her  left  hand  pressing  her
right  breast.  The  head  in  the  centre  of  one  of  the  lotus  medallions ­
  may  possibly  represent  the  intentionally  grotesque  physiognomy
  of  the  native  aborigines.  Various  Brahmi  inscriptions
mention  the  names  of  princely  donors,  such  as  Nagasena,  a
member  of  the  Kaundinya  family  of  Patalipufra.

The  sculpture  trieze  is  divided  into  semi-circular  compartments
by  an  undulating  lotus-creeper,  in  one  of  which  (right)  is  depicfed
  a  scene  from  the  Vessantara-Jataka,  the  giving  away  of  the
rain-producing  elephant  by  Prince  Vessantara  to  the  Brahmin  of
Kalinga;  the  other  compartment  (left)  is  filied  with  various  kinds
of  Ornaments,  beads,  pendants,  ear-rings,  etc.  The  upper  border
of  the  coping  is  crenellated  and  the  lower  is  decorated  with  a
row  of  bells  hanging  from  ropes.
