The modern colour print as a medium for original work dates
from about 1895, when J. D. Batten (1860—1932) and Frank Morley
Fletcher (b. 1866) were making their first experiments in the process
of cutting and prinfing from wood-blocks in the manner practised
by the Japanese. Since then both the Japanese technique and
various styles of engraving and prinfing with oil colours have be-
come populär and successful, while in quife recent times the
younger artists, including some with a penchant for cubism or
futurism, have preferred the linoleum cut for the mulfiplication of
their gay and lively designs.
I hope thaf it may be claimed without vainglory that the
Graphic Arts are in a flourishing state in England, and that our en-
gravers are exceptionally fortunate in enjoying the advantage of a
’ong and sound tradition in technique.
