PAPER PATTERNS FROM THE BIEDERMEIER PERIOD
J. C. BAUER - DRAWINGS FOR JOSEF LOBMEYR
The signature, “J. C. Bauer,“ in tiny handwriting is hidden in the
cutting of Star bases (ill. 62, p. 36; ill. 71, p. 40) or in fields of
gem-shaped facets (ill. 107, p. 49). Previously unknown in the
work of the Lobmeyr Company, the person of the graphic artist,
J. C. Bauer aiso remains a puzzie. Moreover, his rank within
the Company (as a draughtsman?) is still not mentioned. His
work shows itself all the more clearly: dessert and drinking
Services from the earliest periods of the Lobmeyr Company
when Josef Lobmeyr still guided its fate (1823-1855) go back
to him - sometimes in the form of paper patterns for individual
glasses, sometimes captured in fragments of drawings on the
reverse side of sheets of paper that had been cut up for new
shapes (candelabra, big center pieces), leaving only sections
of the old drawings (ilis. 54-56, p. 33; ilis. 104, 105, pp. 46, 47;
ill. 108. p. 49).
This resulted in Strange shapes that on cioser scrutiny turn out
to be fragments of bulbous vessel forms (bottles, beakers,
