THE “COG-WHEEL SERVICE” (“RANFTSERVICE”)
Already on February 5, 1823, in the first surviving accounts book of
Josef Lobmeyr (s. p. 90-94, ills. 239, 241-243), “12[items] large cog-
wheel base glasses with a striped edged Star"are mentioned, and on
February 15, the name Kothgasser appears for the first time on
(“6 [items] drinking [glasses] with Kothgasser shield”).
There is still a beautiful Kothgasser cog-wheel beaker (Rath, Lob
meyr 1998, p. 30) to be found in the Lobmeyr company’s glass mu-
seum today. In 1839 the beaker with atopographical scene now in the
Technical Museum of Vienna went to the collection of the Imperial
Polytechnica! Institute, which is also portrayed on this beaker next to
St. Charles’ Church (ill. 84, p. 43).
“[Like the sample] 30 [items] cog-wheel glasses to be painted"
(18 September 1823) were also probably meant for Kothgasser. On
September 6, 1823, Josef Lobmeyr pushed again to have delivery
made urgently through Johann Blechinger, Ernstbrunn: “Also I need
urgently cog-wheel gl[asses?] of g[?] with edged stripes and star on
the base, would be very nice ifyou would send at least 30 of them with
the next wagon.”
Lobmeyr sends a very urgent reminder on October 19, 1823, to Ble
chinger by way of Fink for a “cog-wheel service:” “Since I promised
someone a few days ago he would receive a cog-wheel service by the
20th or24th of this month because I was certain I could count on your
word, but unfortunately did not receive [the wares] and cannot com-
plete this business but on the contrary am totally embarrassed, there-
fore you cannot be angry with me if I am impatient and no longer be-
lieve in your word...”
On October 19, 1823, Lobmeyr ordered from Blechinger, among
other things “[without pattem] 20 smooth half jugs with cog-wheel
bases” along with “12 small carafes with cog-wheel bases.” On No
vember 27, 1823, Lobmeyr repeats his reminder to Blechinger: “... It
is especially unpleasant for me that you have not sent the cog-vvheel
service, since I needed one again."On the same day he ordered twice
“like the sample. 30 pieces of Kothgasser cog-wheel glasses,” and on
November 29, 1823, he reminds, "... And I do not have any half-seitl
[1 seitl, or seidel = 0.35 liter] and seitl cog-wheel mini-carafes.”
