of the danger of switched caps (although there are also fakes
and frauds in among hollow glassware or ceramics, albeit of a
different nature).
The objects I have examined so far have shown the following
markings:
AUSTRIA, MADE IN AUSTRIA (pp. 16-19, 25), CZECHOSLO-VAKIA,
MADE IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA, CZECH REP. (pp. 21-25,
p. 42), POLAND (pp. 38-41), GERMANY, MADE IN GER-MANY,
MADE IN GDR (p. 42).
These indications of provenance are dealt with in more detail
in the following:
MADE IN AUSTRIA
This regional Classification is valid for the area inside the
Austrian - Hungarian Monarchy up to 1918 and also for the
area of Austria within its present geographical borders. Among
craftwork (e.g. in ceramics and glass) we find that “Austria” is
also used for Bohemia and Moravia prior to the First World
War (one only needs to think of the cut inscription, “Loetz
Austria”).
According to information handed down to us, many of the objects
illustrated come from the time before the Second World
War (thus Bohemia and Moravia can be excluded from this period
between the two wars for historical-political reasons).
Dates are not easy to pinpoint because typical Christmas tree
motifs have been used in many places over a period of decades
and for that reason appear to be almost timeless. One
exception I have found is an Ornament in the style of the 1950s
(p. 16, ill. 16).
Some of the Christmas tree decorations whose caps bear the
inscription “MADE IN AUSTRIA”, are made of a glass material
with a slight opalescent shimmer; the caps themselves are
