HIS  important  work  of  art  is  exhibited
  by  the  kind  permission  of  its
Trustees,  and  has  already  acquired
some  historical  interest,  having  been
competed  for  at  Wimbledon,  in  all,
ten  times,  by  the  picked  Volunteer
shots  of  the  three  Kingdoms,  and  won
with  varying  fortunes  by  England
and  Scotland.
The  general  design  is  allegorical
and  War.  Peace  is  symbolized  by  a
Minerva  bearing  the  olive  branch  and
in  a  car  drawn  by  oxen  wreathed  with

garlands  of  flowers,  while  War  is  symbolized  by
the  god  Mars  in  a  chariot,  to  which  are  harnessed
  fiery  steeds.  A  great  number  of  other
groups  and  figures  are  introduced  to  illustrate  and
complete  the  dominant  idea  of  the  composition,
which  is  made  still  plainer  by  the  mottoes  inscribed
on  the  pedestal—
“  SI  VIS  PACEM  PARA  BELLUM,”
And—
“DEFENCE,  NOT  DEFIANCE.”
The  style  is  Neo  Grec,  and  the  design  is  by  A.
Willms,  the  artist  at  the  head  of  Elkington  &  Co.’s
staff  of  designers  and  modellers  at  Birmingham.
