'HIS S'iield is presented by Lord Elcho to
the Volunteers of Great Britain to be
shot forannually at the great Wimbledon
Tournament, and is held for them by
Trustees, to whose kindness Elkington
& Co. are indebted for permission to
exhibit it.
This work is the largest ever manu-
factured in England in reftousse iron,
being six feet high, and great difficulties
have been overcome in its production.
Iron was chosen because of its in-
destructible qualities, and in order that no intrinsic
value should ever tempt cupidity to destroy it.
The Shield is divided in the upper portion hexa-
gonally, with royal armorial bearings at each side,
and the crown in the compartment at its suinmit—
Britannia occupying the chief—from which is sus-
pended a medallion portrait of Her Majesty the
Queen of England. A border of thistles and roses
binds the lower portion. At the dexter side Queen
Elizabeth reviewing her troops at Tilbury is repre-
sented, and, as an equally interesting subject, Queen
Victoria firing the first shot at Wimbledon, upon
the occasion of opening the Volunteer competition.
Again at the dexter side of the composition is a view
of the Battle of Bannockburn, fought in 1314, balanced
on the sinister side by that of Flodden Field, fought
in 1513, whilst at the foot an English and Scotch
Volunteer are shaking hands, typifying the close Union
of the two countries. It is designed in the mediaeval
style of art by F. Watts, R.A.
