SECTION III.—FAT INDUSTRY.
A.—YEGETABLE AND ANIMAL OILS AND FATS.
A very large number of seeds contain fixed oil in
sufficient quantity to rermmerate for its extraction,
some of these oils possess valuable medicinal pro- |
perties, others are sweet and esculent, others again
possess great drying properties, for which they are
esteemed by painters and artists; whilst, on the j
other band, some are so limpid as to be valuable for
lubricating fine macbinery. For different oils
different uses, and all.these varieties are well repre-
sented in India, but the native method of expression
is so rüde, being little better than a gigantio pestel
and mortar, that one great desideratum towards the
extension of Indian commerce in oils seems to be
inore efficient means for extraction, small, cheap,
efficient, and simple oil presses for native use.
The exhibits of oils, both vegetable and animal,
are exceedingly meagre, and give no idea of the
resources of India in this section.
