This section includes not only the meal and flour
of cereals and pulse, but also all such farinaceous
products as Arrowroot, Tapioca, Sago, &c., with their
preparations. India has large resources in this
section, which, unfortunately, are not represented by
the exhibits.

This curious substance is employed as a meal for
bread, although its source scarcely Warrants its Classi
fication here. It is worthy of note that almost the
same substance is employed for the same purpose by
the natives of New Zealand.

A.—SUGAR,
Largely derived in India from the sugar-cane,
which is cultivated for that purpose, but also from
the date palm and other palms, and such allied
plants as Nipa fruticans.
