juice. Process : the cloth is dyed in safflower
solution, to which lime juice is added.
“ Galino ” (indigo blue). Colour perma
nent. Articles used : indigo and impure
carbonate of soda. Process : a cold watery
solution of indigo and carbonate of soda being
prepared, the wetted cloth is steeped therein.
“ Katavo ” (charcoal black). Permanent.
Articles used: indigo and sulphate of iron.
Process : the indigo is dissolved in an aqueous
solution of sulphate of iron in a proper vat,
and the cloth is steeped in it for a day or two ;
during the steeping the cloth is frequently
shifted.
“ Lilo Galino ” (indigo green). Permanent.
Articles used : turmeric and indigo solution.
Process : steep in solution of indigo, and then
in that of turmeric.
“Asmani” (sky blue). Not permanent.
Articles used : indigo solution and alum.
Process : steep in solution of indigo, to which
alum is afterwards added.
“Lala Majithyo” (madder colour). Per
manent. Articles used : madder, flowers of
grislea tomentosa, alum, and myrobolans.
Process : steep the cloth in decoction of
myrobolans, dry and wash it, then steep in
alum solution and wash, then steep in a
mixed decoction of madder and grislea flowers,
wash and dry.
“ Lala Surangi ” (surangi red). Perma
nent. Articles used : surangi (root of morinda
citrifolia), goat’s düng, myrobolans, alum,
castor oil, impure carbonate of soda, and
tamarisk galls. Process : steep the cloth in a
solution of goat’s düng and wash, then steep
in a decoction of myrobolans, next in alum,
and then in oil, and keep there for eight days ;
make a cold infusion of morinda root and
tamarisk gall, and steep in it for two days.
“ Patangya.” Not permanent. Articles
used : sappan wood (csesalpinia sappan), alum,
myrobolans, and carbonate of soda. Process :
steep in solution of alum and myrobolans,
and dry; then steep in decoction of sappan
wood, to which carbonate of soda is added.
“ Lakhano ” (pink from lac). Not perma
nent. Articles used : lac, bark of symplocos
racemosa, and alum. Process: steep in solu
tion of alum, and dry. Stick lac and sym
plocos bark are pounded, and their decoction
being prepared, the cloth is steeped and dried.
“ Kapilo ” (orange yellow). Permanent
colour. Articles used : “ kapilo ” (the powder
from the capsule of rottlera tinctoria), kermez,
and alum. Process: steep the cloth in a
decoction of the above ; then wash and dry.
“Soneri” (golden yellow). Not perma
nent. Articles used: old roots of turmeric,
carbonate of soda, safflower, and alum. Pro
cess : prepare a decoction of turmeric, to
which soda is added; steep the cloth in,
wash, and steep in a solution of safflower;
and lastly steep in a solution of alum, and
dry.
“ Kesari ” (saffron yellow). Not perma
nent. Articles used: flowers of cnvthamus
tinctorius and carbonate of soda. Process:
steep in a decoction of butea flowers with
soda added; wash and dry.

“ Pilo ” (yellow of Ispung). Not perma
nent. Articles used : isparak (flowers of a
species of delphinium from Cabul), carbonate
of soda, and lime juice. Process: steep for
two hours in a solution of delphinium flowers,
with soda added, then steep in a solution of
lime juice, and dry.
“ Kapasi ” (pale yellow, colour of the cotton
plant flower). Not permanent. Articles
used : flowers of butea frondosa, lime juice,
and turmeric. Process : steep in decoction
of the flowers, then in that of turmeric, and
lastly in lime juice.
“Totai” (“parrot green”). Not perma
nent. Articles used : verdigris, turmeric,
and lime juice. Process : steep in solution
of verdigris, then in that of turmeric with
lime juice added.
“ Halako popati ” (pale parrot green). Not
permanent. Articles used : turmeric, blue
vitriol, and lime juice. Process: steep the
cloth in the various Solutions separately.
“ Pirozo ” (Turkish blue). Permanent.
Articles used : blue vitriol and carbonate of
soda. Process: steep in solution of soda,
and lastly in that of blue vitriol.
“Khaki” (ash colour). Permanent. Ar
ticles used : green vitriol and carbonate of
soda. Process: steep in solution of green
vitriol, and then in that of carbonate of soda.
“ Tapakiri ” (snuff colour). Permanent.
Articles used : catechu and carbonate of
soda, Process ; steep in cold solution of
catechu and soda for two days, then dry.
