627. Brahminical thread. “Janve.” Khandeish. 
Made of country twist by Brahmins, and 
worn as the sacred thread over the left shoulder, 
and passing under the right arm. Each thread 
consists of nine Strands. The investiture with 
the thread takes plaee at the ceremony called 
“moonj” which is generally solemnized at the 
age of eight or nine years. The sacred cotton 
“deo kupas,” or “nurma” (Gossypium arbo- 
reum), is preferred for making the “janve,” but 
is seldom procurable. The thread is renewed 
every year in the month of Shravun.

629. Brahminical thread. “ Shivderee.” Dharwar. 
Made of native cotton, and worn by Lingayats 
alone. The gold or silver box containing the 
“ ling,” or “ lingum ” (emblematic of Shiva, or 
Mahadeo), is suspended on the breast by means 
of this thread or cord. 
630. “Nadas;” coloured. Dharwar. 
Tied by Mahomedans on their wrists, or 
around tlieir necks during the Mohurrun festi- 
val, when mourning is observed for ten days in 
remembrance of the first alleged martyrs of the 
Shiah Mussulmans (Hussan and Hoosein). 
The “nadas” are worn for the ten days, and 
are then thrown into the sea along with the 
“ taboots ” or biers, which are carried in pro- 
cession on the occasion.
