A.—SILK AND SILK THREADS, SPUN SILK, &c. 
Bengal Committee. 
7,953-7,955. Silk thread from cocoons of “ Arindi ” 
moth (Attacus rieini). From Dinagepore, Bogra, 
and Rungpore. 
The sample from Dinagepore is not manu- 
factured as an article of commerce. The silk 
from which it is made is cultivated by Mussul- 
man ryots in small quantities near their houses. 
The cocoons are heated in a pulp, and the thread 
is wound or twisted off by hand. 
8,050. Silk thread. From Pat, Moonga, and Eri 
cocoons, 6 specimens, fine and course. Nowgong, 
Upper Assam. 
104. Eri raw silk (course) with spindle. Nowgong, 
Upper Assam. 
8,057. Silk thread from Malda, 5 tolas (about 2 oz.). 
7,956-7,959. Silk thread from tusser cocoons (Anthe- 
rsea paphia). From Beerbhoom, Bhagulpore, 
Midnapore, Khurdah (in Orissia), Baryadgunge 
(Gya district), Nya Doomka (Sonthal Pergunnahs). 
7,960. Silk thread (dyed), from tusser cocoons (An- 
theraea paphia) from Khurdah in Orissa. Dyed 
with lac and gundli (Rottlera tinctoria). 
7.963. Silk thread (“ Munga ”). Seebsaugor, Assam. 
From cocoons of Antheraea assama. 
7.964. Silk thread (“ Mezankori ”). Seebsaugor, 
Assam. 
So called from the name of the tree, on the 
leaves of which the worms are fed. 
7.965. Silk thread (“ Pat,” Bombyx textor). Seeb 
saugor, Assam. 
The worm which yields this silk is generally 
identified with B. mori; but this is declared to 
be an error. 
7.966. Silk thread. From ordinary Chinese moth, 
contributed by Lai Behari Dutt, Goolda Factory, 
Midnapore. 
Bombyx silk; two qualities, “ordinary” and 
“extra.” The ordinary quality only is reeled, 
as the “extra” does not pay. The filature 
produces about 300 factory maunds annually. 
7,967- Silk thread. From Rajshahye. 
Also a Bombyx silk. The yield in Rajshahye 
is about 5,000 maunds, and Supports about 
250,000 people. 
7,968. Silk thread. Prankissen, Law, and Co. 
Produced at Moheshpore, near Ghatal, in the 
district of Midnapore. The annual out-turn is 
about 300 lbs. 
7.971. Silk thread. Messrs. L. Payen and Co. of 
Bholahat, district Maldah. Reeled by steam 
power. 
7.972. Silk thread. From Bholahat, Maldah. 
Native silk reeled in the village of Bholahat. 
7,969-7,970. Silk thread. From Midnapore and 
Berhampore. 
These specimens (Nos. 7,966 and 7,970 are all 
the produce of Bombyx cocoons commonly said 
tobe B. mori; but this is not so. B. textor, 
B. fortunatus, B. craesi, and B. sinensis being 
the species to which the Bengal cocoons should 
be referred. 
8,021. Waste or refuse silk of Bomhyxl 
mori. I 
8,022. Tangle from reiected cocoons (“lat”) > 1 f rom 
of Bombyx mori. I Bogra ' 
8,023. Thread from ditto. 
8,024. Bündle of “ chessum ” (refuse silk after 
reeling) contributed by Messrs. L. Payen and 
Co., Bholahat, Maldah. 
Native name “jhattam;” the produce of 
Messrs. L. Payen and Co’s. steam filature. This 
refuse, formerly turned to no use whatever, is 
now an important article of merchandise, its 
export to England having reached an average of 
14,000 maunds per annum. 
7,973. “ Chessum ” (refuse silk after reeling) of 
Bombyx mori. From Bogra. 
7,974-7,976. “Chessum” from cocoons of the varie- 
ties of tusser moth, known as “Ampathi” or 
“Ampatia Fuki,” “ Dava,” and “Baghai.”
