39. “Ticka.” Forehead marks. Worn chiefly by
Hindoo women.
Widows are not allowed to wear tliem. The
very small and better made are worn in the
cities; the larger and commoner are worn by
country folk.
37. “Teek.”
Worn on the forehead by the bride only at
weddings, and only worn by Hindoo women.
The rieh ladies wear them made of precious
stones.
38. “ Behna.”
Forehead Ornament. Worn by Hindoo women
only.
40. “ Sakadee.”
Head ornament worn by married and un-
married Hindoo women of high caste. This
ornament comes from the Madras Presideney.
B.—EAR-RINGS.
1 to 31. “ Balee.”
These are ear-rings of different patterns, all
bearingthe same name and worn by Mahomedan
and Hindoo alike. These Ornaments are always
worn in the top of the ear.
33 to 44. “ Jumka.”
The name of this ornament indicates “ shak-
ing,” and is best expressed by the Word pen-
dant, as those Ornaments are nearly always
worn attached to the “ bala ” or ear-ring, worn
always from the middle of the lobe of the ear.
45, 47- “ Bala Bijlee.”
The word “ bijlee ” means lightning, and the
constant glancing and shimmering of the light
fringes has given rise to the expression. The
Hindoo women always wear this ornament in the
middle of the lobe of the ear, whereas the Ma-
homedans always wear it as an ear-ring is worn
in Europe.
48 to G6. “ Bala.”
These ear-rings are always worn in the middle
of the ear. The silver pair, numbered 63, are
worn only by Mahomedans.
67 to 70. “ Dur.”
Worn by Aheers and the lower classes of
Hindoos. The same classes wear the very heavy
anklets, and are usually dwellers in the country.
71 to 100. “ Kurrumphool.”
Flower of the “ kurrum,” and supposed to be
an imitation of the said blossom. These Orna
ments are worn by both Hindoos and Mahome
dans, and fasten into the ear like a stud quite at
the lower end. They vary in design greatly,
some having pendants attached to them.
101 to 116. “Turkee,” “ Kurrumphool.”
These are wooden specimens of the last-men-
tioned ornament, and are worn only by the very
poor.
117 to 119. “ Otays.” Madras Presideney.
Of these ear-rings, No. 117 are worn by Brali-
min girls only. Nos. 118, 119 are worn by
Sudra women and girls.
122. “ Murugoo.”
These ear-rings are worn by little boys.

123, 124. “ Oonapoo cathapoo.”
Both these ear-rings are worn by married
women and girls. Madras.
125, 126. “ Navadam.”
These ear-rings are worn by Sudra women.

127. “ Thundatee.”
Also worn by Sudra women only. Madras.
129, 130. “ Poocheekoondoo.” Worn by Sudra
women and children. Madras.
132. “Tuti.”
Worn through the lobe of the ear; silver.

133. “Patia.”
Worn in the lower part of the ear; silver.

These ear-rings are worn by the unmarried
women of Ulwur. Rajpootana.

1 to 10. “Nathee.”
Nose-ring. Worn by Hindoo and Mahome
dan women.
13, 14. “Besur.”
Worn by both Hindoos and Mahomedans.
16. “ Keel.”
Worn in the nose like a small stud by Hindoos
and Mahomedans.
20,21. “ Chundak ”
This ornament is fastened on to the large ring
worn in the nose by Hindoos and Mahomedans.
23,24. “ Billakh.”
Nose jewel. Worn by high-caste women and
children. Madras.
25. “ Mookeethee.”
Nose-ring. Worn by all castes. Madras.
30 to 39. Nose-rings.
D.—NECKLACES.
1 to 9. “ Kuntha.”
No. 1. Fluted gold beads worn by Soubedars
and Jamadhars; this dass of necklace is chiefly
worn by men and boys, Hindoos and Mahome
dans.
No. 3. Worn by men only, and worn by
(Marwarees) Hindoos, the chief trading dass in
the country.
No. 4. This ornament is worn by Hindoo
women and children only.
Nos. 5 to 6. Are worn alike by Hindoo men
and women in the Deccan.
Nos. 7, 8. Are worn on the neck by Hindoo
men, chiefly Mahrattas.
No. 9. This ornament is wornby women, and,
when in gold, especially by the Bengalees.
10 to 19. “Gope.”
Nos. 10 to 14. Are worn by men and women
alike, chiefly by Hindoos of the Bunniah or
shop-keeping dass; some few Mahomedans
wear them. These Ornaments are worn either
round the neck or round the waist.
No. 15. Is worn by Mahomedan and Hindoo
women alike.
Nos. 16, 17. Are worn by the rieh nobles and
Rajahs.
