No. 19. The beads forming tbis necklace are
supposed to imitate the seeds or fruit of the
Kumruck tree.
21 to 58. “ Malla.”
These necklaees are worn alike by Hindoo
and Mahomedan men, women, and children.
The word “ malla ” means something strung, and
answers to our ehaplet or garland. It is not un-
commonto seepensioned sepoyswiththeirmedals
strung thus, the ribbon having been discarded.
59 to 81. “Kutsullee.”
Worn by both Mahomedan and Hindoo
women. The bead ones are worn chiefly by the
very poor.
83. “Tora.”
This is a favourite Ornament of the Marwaree
men; the pendant is called a “joognoo” or
firefly, whose flashing it is supposed to represent.
It is sometimes, but seldom, worn by women.
84 to 94. “ Hamael.”
Both Hindoo and Mahomedan men and wo
men wear this Ornament. The silver one, No.
93, was sent in by a debtor in Oudh as his pay
ment for rent.
95 to 105. “ Chumpa Kullee.”
This is supposed to be an imitation of the
blossom of the “ chumpa.” It is worn by both
Mahomedan and Hindoo women.
10(1 to 110. “ Huslee.”
This is worn by both Mahomedan and Hindoo
women, and is a very favourite Ornament.
Searcely any woman, however poor, is without
one, either in silver or commoner metal.
111. “ Chuntra.”
This is worn principally by Mahomedans,
and bears a name suggestive of the moon and
stars.
113. “ Sutluree.”
Worn only in gold by Hindoo and Mahome
dan womenj and called by a name signifying
seven chains.
114, 115. “ Panchluree.”
Worn by Hindoo and Mahomedan women,
and also, on grand oecasions, by Rajahs and
Mahomedans of high rank; so called from being
composed of five chains.
110,117- “ Chunan Har.”
Moon necklace, so called from the gold circles
supposed to represent the moon. Worn by
Hindoo and Mahomedan women.

121, 122. “ Joognee.”
Firefly Ornament. Worn by Hindoo and
Mahomedan women alike.

Pendants.' Worn by Mahomedan and Hindoo

124 to 130. “Taweez.”
This is a species of charm. Sanskrit and
Arabic incantations are written out and placed
within the lockets. It is worn alike by Hindoo
and Mahomedan women and childen.
131 to 133. “ Nardullee.”
Worn by boys and men, chiefly by Mahome
dans.
134 to 150. “ Kunthee.”
These necklaees, common as they appear, are
worn by Brahmins of high caste. They have a
religious significance, and are sold in hundreds
at the large religious fairs. The wearers, either
men or women, adopt them as a sort of badge
of Superior sanctity, and are understood never
to take them off; should they be broken or lost,
they must be immediately replaced, as the wearer
can neither eat nor drink or perform any re
ligious ceremonies until they are replaced. This
description applies only to the necklaees made of
straw, pith, and of dilferent small seeds or
wooden beads; all otherkinds ineluded under the
heading of “ kunthee ” are merely ornamental.
151. This necklace has no special name, and is worn
chiefly by the children of the very poorest classes.
155. “ Atekay.”
These necklaees are worn by married and
unmarried high-caste women. Madras.

1-8. “ Jerao, Naonugger.”
Armlet worn above the elbow, so called from
their being usually made of jeweis, and nine
gems being the usual number set. Both Hin
doos and Mahomedans wear these Ornaments.
9-14. “Attardhan ” or “ Bijreyet.”
Worn above the elbow by Hindoo men only.
17, 18. “Joshun.”
This Ornament is also worn above the elbow
by men, women, and children, both Hindoo and
Mahomedan.
19-22. “ Gungera.”
Worn by Hindoo women only, chiefly Mar
waree, Maharatta, and villagers ; always worn
above the elbow.
23-27. “ Banhun.”
Also worn above the elbow by all classes of
Hindoo women.
