Avadea Covill is one of the most beautiful, as well
as one of the oldest temples in the South of India.
It is all built of a stone so hard and compact that
the great cornice, of double curvature, of the porch,
is only half an inch in thickness ; but every detail of
this building is fmished witli an elaborateness unsur-
passed in the country. The whole is probably an
terior to theyear 1000 a.d.

The Temple at Tanjore is one of the few in the
south where the Vimana or temple itself is the Prin
cipal object, and is in correct proportion to the
Gopuras and other subordinate parts. In conse-
quence of this, when seen from the outside, it is one
of the most imposing of Southern temples.
The Palace at Tanjore is one of the most modern,
and though picturesque, is characterised by the vul-
garity of Mahratta taste.

The temple at Peroor has no central object, but
is remarkable for the beaüty of its sculptures, which,
however, are comparatively modern; the oldest of
them can hardly he dated earlier than the early part
of the 17th Century, and they extend into the last.

On the overthrow of the Great Chalukya dynasty
of the Mysore by the Mahomedans in 1310, and
that of Warangul in 1334, the city and dynasty of
Vijia-nuggur rose into importanee, and for more than
two centuries held its own against the powerful
Mahomedan state of Beejapore, tili it was finally
taken and sacked in 1565.
