Düring tliis period it was adorned with temples
and especially with palaces, whioh in their ruins are
unsurpassed by those of any of the old Hindu capi-
tals of India. Frames 101 to 111 hardly suffice to
convey an adequate impression of their heauty or
extent.
As null be observed, most of the civil buildings
betray the influence of the arched style of the Ma-
homedans, though seldom using true arches. The
sacred edifices, however, are quite free from any trace
of foreign influence.
The most remarkable group is that of the great
granite porticoes and stone car, eontained in the
three last frames (109 to 111). For elaborateness of
carving, and difficulty of execution, they are unsur
passed by anything in India.

The gateways of Tarputry are, perhaps, the most
exquisite specimens of carving applied to this pur-
pose in the south of India. They are unfinished, but
are said to have been erected by Krishna Deva, King
of Vijianuggur, in or about 1524; and there seems no
reason for doubting the correctness of the date thus
assigned to them.
