BUDDHIST AND JAINA ARCHITECTUBE.
Besides the two great Topes illustrated in frames
19 to 24 the Buddhist buildings now remaining in
India, are so few as hardly to demand a dass to
themselves in such a series of illustrations as this.—
That of Sarnath at Benares, belonging probably to
the 8th Century, is really the only important one in
India proper. * That at Budh Gya is exceptional,
and unlike anything eise in India. It probably
took its present form from repairs executed by the
Burmese in the beginning of the 14th Century.

The colonnade at Delhi consists of Jaina pillars
extremely rieh in Ornament, but rearranged by the
Mahomedans to form the courtyard of a mosque,
and it is not tili we reach Mount Abu that we obtain
a distinct idea of the beauty of Jaina architecture.
It differs from those above described principally in
the fact that the effect is generally sought to be
obtained internally, not by external decoration as in
the previously described styles. The temples at
Dilwarrah, illustrated 172 to 174, all are in the purest
white marble and ränge from 1025 to 1300 in date,
and as interiors are quite as rieh and elaborate
as the exteriors of the Contemporary temples in the
Mysore.

There are few architectural scenes in India so
remarkable as that of the temple city of Palitana in
Gujerat. It is situated on two picturesque hills,
and strongly fortified, though its only inhabitants
are the sacred pigeons, and a few priests to take care
of the shrines. None of those at present Standing
are very old, the more ancient belonging to the 1 Ith
Century, but they are of all ages from that time to
the present day. Of course, the oldest are the best,
but some of those now erecting are remarkable for
their elegance of form and detail.
