P 11E F A C E.
In preparing tliis Catalogue tlie information forwarded with tlie collections
from India lias bcen, to some cxtcnt, supplemented from otlier sources. The
sections referring to yegetable products liave been mainly compiled by
Dr. M. C. Cooke, and those referring to animal products by Mr. Frederic
Moore, and tbroughout the work thcrc arc valuable notices, tlie sources of
wliicli liave been duly acknowledged.
As heretofore, the Local Committces established in India liave collected
from tlieir own districts the special articlcs of production and manufacture,
and it is to the Secretaries of fliese Committees tliat tliis Exhibition is chiefly
indebted for the valuable collection wliicli bas been forwarded. Unfortu-
nately, the greater part of the consignments did not arrive in Vienna until
after the opening of the Exhibition, wdiicli was much to be regretted, as it
cntailed extra expense and labour, and delayed for a considerable time the
opening of the Indian Court. Tliis delay materially increased the difficulties
connected with the work of the juries, and it is to the indefatigablc exertions
of my colleagues, Colonel Michael and Captain Campbell "Walker, tliat the
Indian Exhibitors arc indebted for the large number of awards wliicli liave
fallen to tlieir share. Upon Lieut. J. E. Itoylc, until the arrival of Colonel
Michael, devolved the preliminary arrangements in the department.
Although the space allotted to India was inadequate to the full display of
one or two important collections, the facilities in the way of cases and dif
ferent appliances provided for the exhibition of tlie various objects were more
liberally supplied on tliis tlian on any previous occasion. As regards tlie
collection as a wliole, it may bc remarked tliat, notwithstanding some
branchcs of manufacture and some groups of raw producc arc inefliciently
represented, the present Exhibition comparcs favourably with its pre-
decessors, wdiilst tlicre arc certain special collections, such as those sent by
the Gcological Survey of India, arranged under the direction of Dr. Oldham,
assisted by Mr. Bruce Foote; the Cotton collection, originally prepared by
Mr. Gerald Fitzgerald and Mr. Itivett-Carnac for the London Exhibition of
1872; the Architectural collection by Mr. James Fcrgusson, tlie collections
of Dr. Leitner, and otliers, all of wliicli afford important contributions to a
knowledgc of the productions of India and of her peoplc.
