As  Mr.  Bourne’s  work  has  the  great  merit  of  avoiding  unsound  and  immature
  views,  it  may  safely  be  consulted  by  all  who  are  really  desirous  of  acquiring
  trustworthy  Information  on  the  subject  of  which  it  treats.  Dunng
the  twenty-two  years  which  have  elapsed  from  the  issue  of  the  first  edition,
the  improvements  introduced  in  the  construotion  of  the  steam  engme  have
been  both  numerous  and  important,  and  of  these  Mr.  Bourne  has  taken  care
to  point  out  the  more  prominent,  and  to  furnish  the  reader  with  such  Information ­
  as  shall  enable  him  readily  to  judge  of  their  relative  value.  Tins  edition ­
  has  been  thoroughly  modernized,  and  mado  to  accord  with  tho  opmions
and  praetice  of  the  more  successful  engineers  of  the  present  day.  All  that
the  book  professes  to  give  is  given  with  ability  and  evident  care.  The  scientific ­
  principles  which  are  permanent  are  admirably  explamed,  and  referenco
is  mide  to  many  of  the  more  valuable  of  the  recently  introduced  engines.  To
express  an  opinion  of  the  value  and  Utility  of  such  a  Work  as  The  Artisan
Club's  Treatise  onthe  Steam  Engine,  which  has  passed  through  eight  editions
already,  would  be  superfluous;  but  it  may  be  safely  stated  that  the  work  is
worthy  the  attentive  study  of  all  either  engaged  in  the  manufacture  of  steam
engines  or  interested  in  economizing  the  use  of  steam.—Mining  Journal.
