Rocking Chairs
Gebrüder Thonet’s first rocking chair was pro-
duced in Korycany starting in 1860 and was
designed for production in solid bent wood
right from the Start. Further variations of the
rocking chair model No. 1 were developed
over the following years, all based on the
same design principle: The seat, backrest,
and connecting pieces are mounted between
two identical side frames. Over time other
types of rocking chairs, including chairs on
runners and rockers on a solid base, where
the rocking function was still preserved by
two laterally mounted Steel springs, were
added to the classic models. 1 An extremely
unusual bentwood rocking chair was creat-
ed in 2011 during a show bending event in
the MAK: The designers of the breaded
Escalope group used a discarded and slightly
damaged plastic stacking chair, which they
turned into a functioning rocking chair with
self-bent beech wood rails for their “Erlkönig”
model. This repair work resulted in the creation
of a functional reliquary, as is were, for what
is currently the most widespread-and usually
considered as ordinary and unattractive-
seating furniture in the world: the monobloc. 2
