Salonsessel Salon Chair, präsentiert auf der Weltausstellung 1867
presented at the 1867 World Fair in Paris
Entwurf Design: Gebrüder Thonet, 1866
Ausführung Execution: Gebrüder Thonet, 1866; Buche, massiv gebogen, gepolstert
Beech, solid bent, upholstered; Firmensammlung Company Collection TON
As early as 1860, Thonet’s bentwood furniture
was available in Paris-at Ingelbach and Wolff-
gang (66, rue de Bondy), which also had a
sales outlet in London. Although the opening
of Thonet's own sales branch was planned for
August or September 1861, it was in the
course of the Paris World Fair, which started
on 1 April 1867, that the branch (92, Boulevard
Sebastopol) was finally opened. The Thonets
displayed an elaborately designed board on
which the already existing branches in Vienna,
London, Hamburg, Berlin, Rotterdam, Pest,
Linz, and Brno were proudly listed. In addition
to the production models, the now well-known
and prevalent Company on the Champ-de-Mars
also presented the so-called demonstration
chair made in Bystrice pod Hostynem. This
chair was never intended for sale. It was merely
meant to serve as proof of the technologically
perfect mastery of wood bending. The presen-
tation was made complete with upholstered
chairs and a new rocking chair, model No. 3,
which was also available as a double rocker,
in which the users sat opposite each other.'
Luxury models, as had been seen at the Paris
World Fair of 1855, and parquet flooring were
no longer to be found.
1 Unfortunately, no copy of this model has been preserved-the
image is a virtual reconstruction based on a photograph. (Thanks to
Manfred Schuh.)
